October 10, 2013The Lookout: Author to share family’s stories from WWII
The LookoutAnn Reily
---- — One family’s real experiences in Latvia, Poland and Germany during World War II will be the focus of a book presentation and signing next Thursday at the Emma Andrews Library.
Marina Dutzmann Kirsch spent eight years researching and writing “Flight of Remembrance: A World War II Memoir of Love and Survival.” The main protagonists are her parents, Rolf Dutzmann and Lilo Wassull, who now live in Brentwood, N.H., and sometimes accompany Kirsch to her presentations. In 1939, Dutzmann was a Latvian aeronautical engineering student forced to flee his homeland for Germany, where he met Wassull and began a romance that survived a number of catastrophic circumstances.
The book, which was a finalist in the 2012 USA Best Book Awards, also includes 132 photos from Kirsch’s family archives. Kirsch, who lives in Kensington, N.H., is an active volunteer with the Amesbury Friends Peace Center and the Jeanne Geiger Crisis Center in Newburyport.
The free presentation on Oct. 17 will run from 7:30 to 9 p.m. at the library, 77 Purchase St., Newburyport. Signed books will be available for $18.

Today was a wonderful day at the Emma. The Yeomans Boat Camp crew came to visit and brought with them some new friends: small and medium crabs, a horseshoe crab, a lobster, some very special shells and more.
Many children and even parents handled the creatures gently. Check out our photo album on Facebook and "like" us if you have not already done so. That way you'll keep in touch with the Emma and all of its activities.
